The Hicks Family
Who am I ? Kerrie Anne Christian (nee Adams), a great great granddaughter of Henry Thomas Hicks, eldest child of James and Margaret Hicks.
It's now been discovered that James Hicks' sister Sarah Hurst-Herbert (nee Hicks) was in the Illawarra by as early as 1823, likewise James' step dad Thomas White - barely 8 years after the first European settlement in the Illawarra. And James Hicks' mum (Margaret White nee Howe) had arrived in Wollongong by 1826.
Nearly 200 years later, and in 2014 we've had 9 generations live in the Illawarra - one of the earliest European Pioneering Families in the Northern Illawarra - with 7 generations of the Hicks McKenzie branch in an unbroken chain since 1837.
Some Hicks' left in the 19th Century, and became Pioneering European families on the NSW North Coast (Hicks). Then some went further afield to Brisbane, Cairns & even Thursday Island and Perth - even overseas!
From childhood Mum would take us to place flowers on the Hicks Family Graves at St Augustine's Bulli. Their names intrigued me - what were their stories? Uncovering them was harder in the past. Finally with Trove & the Web it's possible to discover & share so many more of these stories across our Hicks Family.
