Hicks McCauley connections

The family of James Hicks were associated with the northern Illawarra, NSW Australia from 1830 when James Hicks sought a land grant in what is now Russell Vale. He was away from the area for a time and returned to live permanently there in 1842. Subsequently he moved his family to North Bulli (Austinmer) about 1858. Later his eldest son Henry Thomas Hicks moved to Thirroul about 1887. James Hicks’ wife Margaret and Samuel McCauley’s wife Ann died a day apart in Thirroul in 1905.

There have been several marriages between Hicks descendants and McCauley descendants – via the Henry Thomas Hicks and Alice McEwan nee Hicks lines.

Samuel McCauley and wife Ann Kilpatrick left County Antrim Ireland and emigrated to Australia in 1838 on the “Mandarin“. For five years they were on the Jenkins family Berkeley Estate before buying 24 acres at Thirroul in 1843. Subsequently he made at least one other purchase of land in Thirroul. It is likely that Samuel McCauley’s ancestors were part of the Scottish Ulster Plantation to Ireland era in the 17th Century (1605 – 1697). Also apparently it is considered that the County Antrim McCauley’s originated from theMacAulays of Ardincaple, Scotland. The Ardincaple McCauleys were reputedly located mainly in the traditional county of Dunbartonshire, which straddles the “Highland Line” between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands. These were the Protestant McCauley’s. Apparently some McCauley’s moved to Ireland ahead of the Ulster Plantation and these seem to be the Catholic McCauley’s. The McCauley’s of Thirroul were Protestant McCauley’s. Samuel and Ann McCauley were buried at the Woonona Presbyterian Church graveyard.

It appears that some of Samuel McCauley’s emigrated to Ontario Canada.

Samuel McCauley was the son of Alexander McCauley and Ann Patterson. Alexander’s parents were believed to be John McCauley and Margaret Crane. John’s parents were possibly John McCauley and Margaret Peggy ?
