10. Son – Charles Hicks – Rous Lismore – Murwillumbah

Charles Hicks, a twin to Thomas Hicks , was born 22-06-1857 in Wollongong  & died in 1925 at Newbrae Private Hospital in Murwillumbah

He married Christina Cameron (1867-1943) in 1890. Their children were as follows :

  1. Olive (1891-1892) b & d Lismore
  2. Lyell Cameron (b 1894  Lismore – d 13-2-1957 Queensland) – married Muriel Pearl Hennessey. He had been in road construction (with his father ?) pre WWI. Subsequently e and Muriel were both tailors – having lived in Murwillumbah, Bundaberg (mid 1930’s) , Atherton (1930), Brisbane (1954). Lyell  served in WWI on Western Front where he was gassed and injured his hand.
  3. Ewan Morven Cameron (1907- ) b Lismore

Charles and Thomas, as well as their older brother James (Alexander) Hicks all  appear to have gone up to Northern Rivers area, probably together, and selected land in the Jasper – Rous area near Lismore in the early 1880’s. In fact it is possible that other s siblings also moved north around the same time –  Richard and George and Hamilton, and there appeared to be contact with two of the three sisters who moved north – Mary Jane Collings and Annie Broadhead. Though it is unclear if there was contact with the third sister to move north, Deborah Woodford.

And later three daughters of the oldest brother Henry Thomas Hicks would also move north, as well as some children of second oldest brother William Hicks.

Tragically Charles‘ twin Thomas died of Typhoid in 1894, aged only 37 years. By then Charles had taken over some of  Thomas‘  land at Goonengerry, Jasper Rous area near Lismore. Thomas had moved onto involvement in the Springhill Butter Factory.

Charles initially had a farm called Eureka then moved to  another property at Bexhill, before taking up road building contracting and living at Ballina Street Lismore. Later he and wife Christina moved to Murwillumbah, where another brother James was living with him at the time of his 1906  ( James) death.

Charles is listed in the following North Coast Pioneers Register – (Manning Wallamba Family History Society Inc; Taree, NSW;  2004  (Citation details: 1217)  – as are his wife Christina, and sons Lyell Cameron Hicks, and Ewan Morven Cameron Hicks. Both sons are  believed to have passed away by 2011. Christina’s Cameron family and Shaw family are also included in the North Coast Pioneer Register. Details of the Manning Wallamba Family History Society can be found here – with newsletters.

Interestingly Charles is shown as the friend and Next of Kin of an ANZAC William Dickson Hogg, 43 year old, single, labourer, who enlisted in 1916 and returned to Australia in 1918.
