03. Son – Richard Hicks – Lismore

Acknowledgement – Many details of the Benjamin & Doris Hicks and other parts of the Richard and Emma Hicks Family Tree were contributed by their descendant Wayne Leslie .

Richard Hicks, b. 11-04-1840 (NSW BDM V1840528 61/1840)  d 1921 in Lismore (NSW BDM 20029/1921 )  – married Emma Payne, 28-11-1867  in Wollongong (NSW BDM 3324/1867) . Emma was born 1848 (NSW BDM V18483024 33A/1848) to John & Frances Payne– died 1925 in Lismore (NSW BDM 18424/1925 ).

Richard’s father-in-law John Payne was an Alderman on North Illawarra Council & Wollongong Council for 50 years, and was often Mayor too – refer Trove Search – decades 1860-1940.

Whilst Richard Hicks lived, and then married in the North Bulli (Austinmer) area in the mid 1860’s, by 1882  he had moved his family north to the Lismore area. This was 13 years before his father James’ death in 1895.

However, from the mid 20th Century years,  a number of Richard and Emma’s descendants may have “returned” to their Illawarra roots, including Eileen Victoria Barnes nee Whereat (daughter of Frances Hicks) and Errol John James (grandson of John Campbell Hicks) – and also some of Annie Thompson nee Hicks descendants.

 

  1.  Frances Hicks, b. 1868 (NSW BDM 18199/1868 ) in Wollongong . d 1939 in Tamworth (NSW BDM 20543/1939 ) –  married Isaac Whereat in Lismore 1905 (NSW BDM 4418/1905) – Isaac had previously been married to Elizabeth Murdoch ( -1900). Isaac was prominent in local affairs in Tenterfield – including in business, hospital board member, local Mayor (not to be confused with his son Isaac Sidney Whereat)
